Learn what is an authority.
In order for the Department of Transportation (DOT) to identify your company when registering with the FMCSA branch system you will be issued a USDOT. This number serves for identification purposes usually attached to an authority for operations.
“This number serves for identification purposes usually attached to an authority for operations.”
This leads us to the discussion on type of authorities which are issued by the DOT. You can find the different types here: https://bit.ly/3kzDext however, for our discussion the motor carrier (MC) is the most important. This authority allows for-hire carriers to move interstate, along all 48 available states.
Conversely, local authorities allow for-hire carriers to perform loads intrastate. In most cases the state in questions will have a commission that issues a set of numbers to be used during operations. Here in IL the Illinois Commerce Commission manages these registrations.
